This superb enamel portrait, is inscribed on the reverse with the sitter's name and age, 79. It is set in an ornte, scrolled gilt frame.

Additional Information: William Hargrave joined Lord Charlesworth's Regiment of Foot in 1694, as an Ensign. He served at Cadiz, 1702, then in the West Indies. As a Captain in Col. Henry Disney's Regiment of Foot, he was promoted to Major, in 1710. In the same regiment, he was made Lt. Col. in 1718 and served with it, in Ireland till 1720. He then transfered to the 13th Somerset Light Infantry, serving as Lt. Col. until 1730 when he rose to the Colonelcy of the 31st. Regoiment of Foot, subsequently serving with the 9th Regiment of Foot in 1737 and the Royal Fusiliers in 1739. That year, he became Governor of Gibraltar and was promoted to Lt. Gen. in 1743. about the date of this portrait.
He died in 1751 and was burried in Westminster Abbey. William Prewett worked c 1735-50. Works by him are scarce and not often signed, it has been attributed to him by comparison with the few signed works existing in the V. and A.and the Duke of Buccleuch's collections.Daphne's attribution to Seaman would not be possible as Seaman stopped working in 1731.
