Additional Information: Lady Augusta was born in London, second child of George Augustus Fitzclarence, Earl of Munster, and his wife Mary (nee Wyndham).George was the eldest of the nine illegitimate children of King William IV and his mistress Dorothea Jordan.George commited suicide in 1842 and his wife died in the same year, leaving Lady Augusta and her siblings orphans. It is probable that their Uncle, the Rev. Lord Augustus Fitzclarence, a bachelor living in Gloucestershire, took charge of the children. In 1844 Augusta left England to marry in Paris, Baron Knut Philip de Bonde. This miniature was painted in that year, very probably as a keepsake for her uncle. In 1846, she gave birth to a child, a daughter also named Augusta, but sadly died after the birth. Her uncle Lord Augustus Fitzclarence, married in 1845 and had four daughters and two sons. The second daughter inherited this miniature and bequeathed it to T.C.E. Goff, her nephew. Provenance: 1. Rev. Lord Augustus Fitzclarence, Vicar of Mapledurham. 2.Lady Augustus Fitzclarence (wife) 3. Miss Eva Fitzclarence (daughter) 4. Major T.C.E.Goff (nephew to the above) 5. By descent to the previous owner 1973.
