Major Paul Bose of the Madras European Infantry, was painted in India c. 1792. The miniature is set in a period locket frame, with a hair panel reverse.

Paul Bose enlisted in the Madras European Infantry, as a cadet, in 1781. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant in 1790. He married in 1792, a girl named Eliza (perhaps Isabel Bellew)
In 1795 he was Adjutant of the 2nd Regiment, which was disbanded in 1799 and he moved as Captain to the 14th Madras Native Infantry and rose to Major by 1805. He died about three years later at Vellore in the same area.
Paul and Eliza, had five recorded children. The eldest was Edward Bellew Bose, born 1793, and christened at Fort St. George, Madras. Second was Henry Thomas, christened 1795, then Alexander Mira, christened 1801, and then Emma Matilda, christened 1805 and last Eliza in 1806. He died in 1808.

Samuel Andrews 1767-1807
In 1791 he applied for permission to go to India and was refused but arrived there anyway. He married and moved in to the same house, in Madras, as was occupied by John Smart, from where he advertised himself as a miniature painter. He worked in watercolour and ‘en grisaille’ with dark backgrounds. These profiles were sometimes signed. He died at Patna in 1807.
His portraits show a greenish shading on the face, the cheeks and mouth being a rather vivid red.
