Additional Information: The sitter in this portrait miniature was painted between c.1810 and 1815 and is a Field Officer – major, lieutenant-colonel or colonel – in a British infantry regiment whose officers wore coatees with black facings and silver lace. At the time, the only regular regiment of British line infantry whose officers were so dressed was the 50th (or West Kent) Regiment of Foot but some regiments of Militia, Local Militia and Volunteers would have been similarly uniformed and this Field Officer may be from one of those. Definite regimental identification is impossible but the fact that he is wearing his hair and sideburns in a manner that at the time was closely associated with the soldiers who were actively engaged in the defeat of Napoleon may well mean that this sitter is a Field Officer of the 50th Foot, which – between 1810 and 1814 – distinguished itself in the Peninsular War in Spain.
