Thomas Hazlehurst circa 1795-6.

Believed to be a portrait of Ensign Walter A Burke 62nd. Regiment (Wiltshires) He joined the 110th Regiment of Foot in July 1794 moving to the 62nd.regiment in September 1795. This fine miniature was taken at about that time, the Regiment being in the West Indies. The miniature is signed with initials, 'T.H.' and is set in the original locket frame, with hair panel reverse bearing the monogram 'W.B.'

William Thicke circa 1815. Commander James Poate.

James entered the navy as a Lieutenant's servant on board the Pegase sloop. He served on many vessels including the Hussar 28 under his uncle Captain Colnett( who went round the world with Captain Cook and afterwards several times by himself).He was a prisoner of war in France for some while and subsequently served again on many ships including the Minerva Frigate on which he was for seven years, first Lieutenant.While his ship was fitting out in January 1806, in the river Thames, James Poate had the honour of attending the funeral of Lord Nelson, on which occasion he was in the foremost boat, bearing the hero's flag. Commander Poate married in 1810 and had a son and four daughters. Full naval history available. The miniature is sold with Poate's siver cravat pin'

Charles Shirreff 1806, a young officer

This attractive miniature dates from Shirreff's time in India.The reverse has a hair panel upon which the owner had fixed a pretty pansy flower in hair on ivory, pansies being for 'pensees' thoughts of you. We can presume that the young officer gave this miniature to his true love. Illustrated in 'Miniatures, a Dictionary and Guide'by D. Foskett. Plate 47G.page 205.
