This fine example of Philip Jean's work, is of an aristocratic looking gentleman wearing a long curled wig and black coat with ruffled stock.It is set in the original locket frame with blue enamel surround. The reverse has a purple guilloche panel with a central hair panel of two entwined locks of hair and the motto,'Ils sont les gages d'amitie et de la nature' They are the tokens of friendship and sentiment' This miniature was a gift of friendship and love.

Philip Jean 1781 The artist's wife.

This is an importrant work by Philip Jean. It shows Anne Jean, nee Noel, the artist's wife, seated in front of the harbour wall at St. Helier, Jersey. She is holding a miniature of her husband.It is signed and dated 1781 and inscribed AE 17 and is also inscribed on the reverse. A very lovely portrait miniature and one of Shelley's finest works. The sitter, Mrs William Bayly, nee Anne Swift, came from Baldoyle, Dublin, Ireland.She is depicted wearing a blue satin gown with yellow tabbed shoulder wings, her powdered hair in curls.It is set in the original locket frame with hair panel reverse, bearing initials in seed pearls.The miniature is signed on the reverse.
